Aviation Socks
“Wouldn’t it be fun,” I thought one night while sipping a cocktail, “to have a series of sock patterns with drinks the same colour as the yarn? And wouldn’t it be neat,” I went on, “if they all had a design element in common, like traveling stitches or little cables?” And so I began to design and knit a Twisted Trilogy of socks. This is the third pair of the set. Check out its siblings, Sapphire Martini and Boulevardier!
The Aviation Socks have columns of wings flying over a stretchy ribbed background, which continue down into the heel and over the instep. Of course, you don’t have to knit them in purple, but the stitch pattern will show up best if you choose a solid or semi-solid yarn.
SIZE / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Fits a foot that’s 8.5 inches around at widest point. The stitch pattern is stretchy and quite forgiving thanks to the ribbing, so erring on the small side is all right. I recommend using a slightly thicker yarn and larger needles to make bigger socks.
YARN: Any fingering weight yarn you like that will give you the appropriate gauge. The sample socks were knit with ONline Supersocke 100, which is a fairly standard sock yarn at 459 yards to 100 grams.
GAUGE: 32 stitches = 4”/10cm in stockinette; one 8-round pattern repeat is approximately 5/8” tall.
AND ALSO: US 1/2.25mm double pointed needles (or size needed to get gauge) plus a darning needle.
