I would suggest using a #2 Sport weight yarn so that you get a reasonable sized mug rug.

Col A - 2 x balls
Col B - 2 x balls

Yarn Usage FOR COLOR CHANGES:
Col 1 - 1 x ball
Col 2 - 2 x balls
Col 3 - 1 x ball
Col 4 - 1 x ball

with a 2.5mm hook.

I used a 2.0mm hook for the borders
