“October was a beautiful month at Green Gables, when the birches in the hollow turned as golden as the sunshine and the maples behind the orchard were royal crimson and the wild cherry trees along the lane put on the loveliest shades of dark red and bronzy green, while the fields sunned themselves in the aftermath.“

Avonlea Cowl is the first pattern in my Green Gables Collection. This pattern is inspired by the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery, and the different seasons of growth Anne experiences as she comes of age in Avonlea. The cowl also reflects the beautiful language used to describe the changing seasons of Avonlea and Green Gables, set in Prince Edward Island, Canada in the early 1900s. The cowl begins with a simple seed stitch border at the top, to represent the seeds planted at the beginning of spring, then it transitions to the stockinette stitch portion to represent the slow waiting, and finally it blooms into the lace section and picot bind off. Using just one skein of tonal, solid, or semi-solid fingering weight yarn, this makes the perfect transition piece to use up that one special skein of yarn.
