When I was a child, my mother made a handmade wreath from quilting cotton and yarn ties to hang on our front door every holiday season. After I moved out, she gave me a wreath for my own front door that I hang every year. Naturally, when I first thought about designing a knitted wreath, I knew that it had to have a silhouette similar to our family wreath—a little bit scrappy and stitches that mimic yarn ties.

When picking out your yarns, don’t forget the other wreath-worthy holidays. Use some self-striping for Halloween, all of your red scraps for Valentine’s Day, grab your blues and greens for Earth Day, or rainbow scraps for a Pride wreath.

Awreatha uses simple knit and slipped stitches to form tufted sections. A provisional cast on and grafted bind off give the wreath a smooth, seamless look. Use your regular cast on, bind off, and seaming method if you prefer a seamed edge.

Sizes:
Small – 3”/7.6 cm across
Medium – 8”/20.3 cm across
Large – 14”/35.5 cm across

Yarn Requirements:
The pictured samples are made from 100% superwash wool or superwash wool blends. I recommend wool or an acrylic with good recovery.

For extra color, try a self-striping or variegated yarn. Dip in to your sock yarn scraps and hold different colors together for a marled effect. Add a strand of mohair or novelty yarn for extra texture. The possibilities are limitless.
