Using light weight yarn (also called double-knitting, DK, or light worsted) and a 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook, your axolotl should be about 4 cm / 1.6” wide and 9 cm (3.5”) long. Use thicker yarn to make a bigger axolotl, or thinner yarn to make a smaller one.
