The Baby Aosta Sweater is an Andalusian stitch top-down raglan sweater with a a 1x1 rib button band yoke. It is worked back and forth in rows through the yoke and body. You will then pick up the stitches for the sleeves and work them in the round with some gentle decreases to create a slight taper. I recommend that you finish the body and sleeves with tubular cast-offs, but you can use your preferred method.
Materials & Fit
Notions: 4 mm (I would recommend a 40-cm cord and either a 80- or 100-cm cord to be used with the magic loop method and perhaps, if you find them comfortable, a 25-cm cord for the sleeves, but this is by no means necessary) circular needles. You will also need one 4 mm DPKN to join the button band.
You will need 8 stitch markers, one of which should be in a contrasting colour to indicate the beginning of the round, a darning needle, and some spare needles/scrap yarn/stitch holders where the stitches of the sleeves will rest.
To finish the Sweater off, you will also need three 15 mm buttons.
Yarn: Approximately 2 (2) 3 (4) 4 (4) 4 skeins of Sandnes Garn Double Sunday (100% merino wool; 108 m/50 g). The sample garment was made in the colour Eucalyptus 8051.
Yarn alternatives: Any thick DK-weight yarn with good stitch definition will be a good option here. A good synthetic alternative might be Phildar Phil Charly (100% acrylic; 114m/50 g), whilst a good superwash option might be Sirdar Snuggly Cashmere Merino Silk DK (75% superwash merino wool, 20% silk, 5% cashmere; 116 m/50 g).
Tension: 22 sts x 34 rounds in Andalusian stitch on 4 mm needles. Make sure to wash and block your swatch for the most accurate results. Please note that I have tighter-than-average row gauge, but this isn’t too important in this pattern. You may wish to go up or down a needle size, working in 0.25/0.5 mm increments as needed to meet gauge.
Sizing and ease: The Baby Aosta Sweater has about 4-5 cm ease around the waist. It is designed to have a bit more ease around the chest to keep make the garment as comfortable as possible for babies and toddlers.
Use the measurements listed below to pick a size. The sizes given here are based on age but pick the size with the best chest measurement rather than sticking strictly to the age range for best results as these are only a suggestion.
