Worked from the top down, this circular yoke sweater is a kids version of the adult Bobble Buster sweater. This pattern includes some back neck shaping, since kids deserve warm necks too, and skips sleeve shaping, with simple ribbing at the cuff.
This design was Annie Paaren’s idea. Annie’s a dyer with a great sense of style, and a deep stash. She was wishing for a simple bobble sweater where she could play with colour, using scraps or mini skeins, but without creating a mess of strands on the wrong side of the work. Meanwhile, I’ve been playing with trying to get intarsia effects without actually having to learn intarsia techniques, and a contrast colour bobble fit this theme perfectly. So we teamed up!
Use fingering weight for your bobbles, on a DK weight stockinette base - or play with with proportion, and try using mohair, yarns held together - whatever strikes your fancy. For a preview of the easy-to-do bobble and finishing techniques visit these YouTube tutorials.
Choosing a Size: Aim for 2-3” of ease in the chest, and if desired, double the length of the cuff, so the sweater can grow along with the child. While the adult version of this sweater has a relatively short body, for kids I’ve chosen a longer length.
Sample shown is size 8/9 on child 3’11”, 50 lbs.
