Materials

• 1 x skein Cygnet’s Pato baby dk (Candy 797)
• 1 x skein Cygnet’s Pato baby dk (White 799)
• 3mm crochet hook
• Tapestry Needle
• Scissors

Notes
This cardigan is shaped by creating 3.5” x 3.5” granny squares and whip stitching them together.

YO = yarn over

CH = chain

DC = double crochet

SC = single crochet

SLST = slipped stitch

HDC = half double crochet

CL = cluster

Flower Granny Squares

You will need 4 Flower Granny Squares.

Center of Flower:

CH2, place 8 SC into the first CH, SLST to join, and fasten off.
Join contrasting yarn in one of the SC stitches.
Petals:

CH3, make a 2DC cluster (yo, insert hook, yo, pull through, yo pull through 2 loops only. Repeat once more until you have 3 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all 3 loops).
CH3, make a 3DC cluster (yo, insert hook, yo, pull through, yo pull through 2 loops only. Repeat twice more until you have 4 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all 4 loops) into the next SC stitch.
Repeat the above step until you have 8 petals. SLST and fasten off.
Forming the Square:

Attach the original yarn and CH3.
For each flower corner (4 corners): Make 3DC (initial CH3 counts as 1 DC) in the CH spaces, CH2, 3DC, CH1.
For each flower side (4 sides): Make 3HDC in the CH spaces, CH1.
SLST to start of the row.
CH3 (counts as 1DC in the initial corner), 2DC, CH2, 3DC, CH1 (4 corner granny clusters).
3DC into each CH space (8 side granny clusters).
SLST and fasten off.

Traditional Granny Squares

You will need 8 Traditional Granny Squares.

Starting the Square:

CH3 (counts as 1DC in the initial corner), 2DC into the first CH.
CH2, 3DC into the first CH.
Continue until you have 4 corner granny clusters.
SLST to join.
Corners and Sides:

Corners: CH3 (counts as 1DC in the initial corner), 2DC into the CH space, CH2, 3DC, CH1.
Sides: 3DC in each side chain space, CH1.
Continue until you have completed 4 rounds of granny clusters.

Assembly

Layout:

Front: Top (left/right) 2 traditional granny squares, bottom (left/right) 2 flower granny squares.
Back: Top (left/right) 2 traditional granny squares, bottom (left/right) 2 flower granny squares.
Arms: (front, back) 2 traditional granny squares.
Joining Squares:

Whip stitch squares together using the main yarn color and a tapestry needle.
Cut a length of yarn (about 12 inches) and thread it through a yarn needle.
Align the two squares with the right sides facing each other.
Begin at one corner, insert the needle from the front through the corresponding spot on the other piece, coming back to the first piece and catching the tail in the next stitches.
Continue the whip stitch by inserting the needle through the same spot on the first piece and then on the second piece. Keep a consistent tension, neither too tight nor too loose, to maintain an even seam.
When you reach the end of the seam, secure the yarn by splitting the yarn in two and making a small knot. Cut off any excess yarn with scissors.

Edging

Body Edge:

Attach contrasting yarn to the body edge, CH1. SC into each CH to create a border.
Arms Edge:

Attach contrasting yarn to the arms edge.
Row 1: CH1, SC into each CH to create a border.
Row 2: SC for 2 stitches, then skip a stitch to decrease.
Shell Edge:

Shell stitch the bottom edge: CH3 (counts as 1DC in the initial shell), 4DC, skip a CH, SLST, skip a CH. Make 5 DC for every next shell.
