Baby Girl Hat & Mitten Set
This pattern was made for a newborn baby girl, because of the color and the addition of the bow, but it can be made for a boy too simply by changing the color and omitting the bow.
Materials Used:
Bernat Baby Sport lightweight (“3”) 100% acrylic yarn- about 1 oz used for the set- Color “Baby Pink”
4- 4 mm DPN’s (or you can use a 16 inch long size 4 mm circular needle for the beginning of the hat, but you will need to change to dpn’s for the crown)
4- 3.75 mm DPN’s for the mitten cuffs and the bow
Stitch marker (for marking end/beg of round)
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends & sewing the bow to the hat)
Gauge: using 4 mm needles, 8 sts and 8 rounds (in K3, P1 ribbing)= 1 inch
Size: Newborn
Finished Measurements: (unstretched) Hat- 9.5 inches circumference and 5 inches long (which includes the cuff which is 1 ¼ inches long). Hat will stretch comfortably to 14 or 15 inches.// Mittens 3 ½ inches long (including cuff which is 1 ¼ inch long) and about 4 inches in circumference
Notes: Because of the ribbing, this hat is super stretchy, so it will fit a variety of newborn head sizes. Also, you can make the ribbed cuff of the hat a bit tighter by using a slightly smaller needle, as I did for the cuff of the mittens. If you think the mitten cuffs are still too loose, you could try weaving a ribbon through the stitches of the final round of the cuff and tie with a bow, or make a crochet chain (of about 50-60 chains). However, you must keep in mind that baby’s often put their hands in or near their mouths and this could pose a safety risk. Also, you can make the mitten cuff longer by repeating the K2 P2 ribbing a few more rounds, and the hand of the mitten longer by repeating the St St rounds (Round 2 of the hand) more times.
