Notes from the Designer:

The motifs used in this lacy, circular top look like the long, swaying branches of the weeping willow tree (Salix babylonica). The weeping willow tree’s scientific name “babylonica” came from the thought that the tree came from Ancient Babylon, which was later proven inaccurate. Nonetheless, the weeping willow has been important in medicine and folklore in many cultures; it is revered for its healing properties and portrayed as a powerful spiritual symbol of thriving in challenging conditions. The branches are also resilient and flexible. If a cut branch is planted in the ground, a new tree will take root.

  • All crochet terms are in US English. Please note there are differences between US and UK crochet terminology.
  • The Size XS/S shown in the sample has three Leaf Rounds before the trim.
  • This top is worked seamlessly in the round and is meant to be worn loose and flowy, like the swaying branches of the weeping willow tree. The top can be easily customized to your preferences in flounce and length. If you want a top with less movement and flounce, choose a smaller size. If you want a more cropped version, work fewer body repeats before adding the trim.
  • The trim will add approximately 3” (7.5 cm) to the total length of the top.
  • I have named the main types of rounds Stem, Branch, and Leaf to more easily identify them for how many repeats of each type of round will be made.
  • The diagrams are drawn from the perspective of a right-handed crocheter. If you crochet left-handed, your charts will be flipped on the vertical axis.
