I had the idea for these socks as a result of nostalgic memories of white lacework school socks from primary school days. I wanted to knit myself a grown up version to wear in different colours. This lacework pattern is a 24 stitch repeat over 72 stitches. This ladies medium pattern is knit with 2.25mm and fits a 34-39cm mid-calf circumference. If you’d prefer a larger sock you can go up a needle size to 2.5 or 2.75mm although I have not included the measurements or yarn yardage needed for these sizes. They fit any foot size as you will knit the repeat until desired length is reached. I hope you enjoy knitting these cute socks as much as I did.
This pattern is written in toe up construction, however if you are a skilled knitter, you could easily convert it to cuff down. Toe up construction is very helpful if you want to use wool that you don’t know the meterage of, or you want to use up the whole ball. Just split the ball into two balls of equal weight, knit the foot length to desired size, then continue knitting the pattern repeat for the leg, until you use all the yarn.
The sock I have knitted in 2.25mm needles is a women’s uk size 6 and used of 88g / 352m of main colour and 20 g / 80m of cuff/ heel/ toe colour.
I have used a wrap and turn short heel and a wedge toe using Judy’s magic cast on, but if you are knitting cuff down you can use any heel and toe construction you prefer. You can also make these as ankle or mid-calf length socks, just stop the leg pattern at your desired leg length and add the cuff.
