Backstage Tweed Jacket
Pattern Description from Interweave Knits, Fall 2008: “Exquisite construction highlights the seamless yoke of the Backstage Tweed Jacket: Simple two-over-two crosses are engineered cleverly into the shaping, becoming both decoration and architecture. Alina Khasanova uses two yarns in the same palette but with different fiber contents to emphasize the combination of draping, belled body, and refined yoke and collar.”
Finished Size: 36¼ (41, 44, 47.75, 51½)“ bust circumference.
Yarn: Plymouth Tweed (100% wool) 109 yd 100m/50g): #5315 burgundy (MC), 9 (11, 12, 14, 15) skeins
Super Taj Mahal (70% merino, 22% silk, 8% cashmere; 127 yd 115m/50 g): #1426 deep rose (CC), 3 (3, 5, 5, 5) skeins. Yarn distributed by Plymouth Yarns.
Needles: Body and sleeves—size 7 (4.5 mm): 32” and 16” circular (cir), and set of 4 double-pointed (dpn) or 12” cir. Collar facing—size 3 (3.25 mm): 24” cir. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Markers (m); tapestry needle; stitch holders; 9 sets of hook-and-eye closures; sharp-point sewing needle and thread to match CC.
Additional Gauge: 30 sts and 28 rows = 4” in diagonal patts from charts with CC on larger needles.
Notes:
- The belled sleeves are worked in the round from the cuffs up, decreasing in the center of the sleeve to taper the bell, then increasing for some sizes along the underarm to shape the upper sleeve in the usual manner.
- The lower body is worked back and forth in rows in one piece to the start of the yoke with decreases at the sides and center back to create the swing shape, then the body and sleeves are joined for working the yoke in one piece to the top of the neck.
- The textured, contrasting front panels are each worked with a separate ball of yarn using the intarsia method. Twist the yarns at each color change to avoid leaving holes.
- Cables that contain decreases are shaded in blue on the chart so the stitches that are decreased away will stand out from the adjacent “no stitch” symbols.
