Bactrian Bobble Cowl
The Bactrian Bobble Cowl is a delightful and fully reversible double-knit cowl that’s fun to knit. Please note - this pattern does not use DK weight yarn; it uses double-knitting techniques to create a double-layered reversible fabric.
You’ll knit your Bactrian Bobble Cowl in the round with at most 100 grams (combined) of fingering weight yarn in either 2 or 3 colors, using US (3.25 mm) circular needles or smaller to achieve the diameter you desire. The pattern begins with swatching instructions to calculate gauge for a good fit, no matter what fibers or needles you decide to use.
While I do provide a good amount of how-to details, my instructions assume you already know the basics of standard and double-knitting techniques: casting on/binding off; moving yarns as you k-p each stitch set; following charts; k-p-king into a stitch to increase; decreasing by knitting stitches together; joining your work into a circular piece for knitting in the round; and weaving your ends in to finish. The techniques for bobble construction and optional embroidery are explained in full with text and photos. If you know the basics of double-knitting and can follow instructions for the bobbles (we’ll be breaking a few double-knitting rules to construct them!), you can complete this pattern.
The yarn in the brown-orange cowl (my favorite from the three shown in the instructions) was purchased from Ula + Lia, a unique source of Mongolian fibers. I’ve included more about them in the pattern, including a link to their website. The green cowl was knit with Malabrigo sock yarn.
Knitting brings me great joy and satisfaction, and I hope it does the same for you. Every pattern I offer is my original design. I want you to make something unique that you’ll be proud to wear or give as a gift to someone you care for.
