Baguette Bag
The baguette bag is an iconic fashion accessory that is very much on trend again in the 2020s. With many of us working from home and forgoing our heavy totes for smaller purses, the baguette is the perfect alternative. Its small size makes it a great wear-everywhere purse; the short single strap handle can be worn on one shoulder or held as a top-handle. This one-ball project is suitable for advanced beginners and also makes a great stash buster.
Materials List
- 165m/180y or 100gr/3.5oz. of worsted/medium yarn. I used 1 ball of Hobbii’s Malaga Glitter. Using a thinner yarn (like Avec Glamour) is also possible but requires about 320m with yarn held double.
- 4mm hook (G-6 US) (8 UK)
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle to sew and weave in ends
- For stash-busting ideas see pattern
Gauge
Exact gauge isn’t crucial but will affect the final size of the bag. A gauge of 14 stitches and 18 rows in sc for a 10x10cm/4x4” swatch results in a finished bag that measures 25x14x4cm or 10x5.5x1.5”.
Sizing
This pattern is written for a medium-sized baguette but can easily be amended to create a smaller or larger version by using a yarn and/or a hook with a slightly different gauge. Do make sure your finished swatch is stiff and tight enough for a bag, though.
Bag measurements
Width: 25cm/10”
Height: 14cm/5.5”
Depth: 4cm/1.5”
Handle: 40cm/16”
Notes
* The bag is worked in three separate
parts—two side panels and a piece for
the bottom/sides/strap—which are then
sewn together.
* I recommend you read through the
pattern completely before beginning,
just to make sure you understand
everything.
* For readability, the pattern is
written in cm only; for measurements
in inches, see schematic.
* Closure and embellishments are
optional.
