The Balderdash Cowl provides an extra thick barrier between your neck and the cold of deep winter. The fabric is also perfectly reversible in every way so it doesn’t matter if it ever gets turned inside out. No one will ever be able to tell, probably not even me.
The instructions are both fully written out in abbreviated format and fully charted. The pattern is formatted to facilitate printing only the pages of instructions that the knitter needs for either the written abbreviated or fully charted directions.
Finished measurements: 3 Degrees of Cowl are included but customization is easy. Just add or subtract a multiple of 6 stitches at the cast on to adjust circumference; and increase or decrease the number of pattern repeats worked to adjust depth.
- The BA, or Basic Accessory, is a snug cowl measuring 20in (50.8cm) in circumference and 6in (15.3cm) deep.
- The MA, or Mid-sized Accessory, is a long loop cowl measuring 40in (101.6cm) in circumference and 6in (15.3cm) deep.
- The PhD, or Piled High and Deep, is a more generous cowl measuring about 29in (73.7cm) in circumference and 9in (22.9cm) deep.
Required Materials: Super Bulky yarn.
- 100yd (92m) for the BA
- 200yd (184m) for the MA
- 200yd (184m) for the PhD
Tools Required:
- US10.5 (6.5mm) circular knitting needle: 16in (40.6cm) for the BA; 32in (81.3cm) or 40in (101.6cm) for the MA; 24in (61cm) or 30in (76.2cm) for the PhD
- 1 stitch marker is strongly recommended for the beginning/end of round.
- Cable needle, optional. I found that I could work the cables without a cable needle, but used one most of the time anyways.
- Bodkin or crochet hook, whichever you prefer for finishing the ends.
Stitches/skills used in the pattern: Knitted cast on, knitting in the round, K, P, double wrapped stitches along with dropping all of the extra wraps when working them, 3x3 cables, traditional bind off or your favorite stretchy bind off.
Acknowledgements: Thank you to Russ Moore for the superb technical edit of the pattern. Thank you to LisaDP for testing the pattern.
