Ballot Box Beanie
INTRODUCTION
We live in interesting times, unfortunately. This design is a not-very-subtle reminder to excercise our rights, whenever we have the opportunity. I wrote it as the UK prepared for a General Election in 2019, and that went well didn’t it. As the US Election looms on the horizon, I’m making this pattern available for whoever wants it, because whether there will be anything to celebrate in the results, at least we can celebrate our right to vote, and the people who fought to make that possible.
YARN
Countess Ablaze Grande Merino DK (100% Superwash Extra Fine Merino; 225m/246yds; 115g)
MC: Bojo Brexshit Bonanza (approx 98m/107yds/50g for M size)
CC: Proroged (approx 59m/64yds/30g for M size)
Contrast Cast On (optional): Rebelling Against Suburbia (less than 10m/11yds/5g)
Another 30g of yarn needed if you make a pompom.
NEEDLES
3.5mm (US 4) and 4mm (US 6) needles for your preferred method for knitting in the round (I used Magic Loop). Always use the right size to match the recommended gauge.
GAUGE
22 sts x 29 rows = 10cm/4” over stranded knitting, blocked.
NOTIONS
Stitch markers, tapestry needle, pom pom maker (optional if you want to add a bobble).
SIZE
Designed with some negative ease. Knit a bigger size for a slouchier fit, adding more rows after Chart A/B before Crown shaping.
To fit
Head circumferences:
XS (child) 42cm/16.5”, actual size 40cm/16”
S (teen/small adult) 53 cm/21”, actual size 49cm/19”
M: 59cm/23”, actual size 54cm/21”
L: 66cm/26”, actual size 61cm/24”
XL: 73cm/29”, actual size 68cm/27”
DESIGN NOTES
Techniques used: Long-tail cast on, working in the round, stranded colour work, charted instructions.
The floats at the back are never longer than 7 sts, but you may want to catch the unworked colour at the back on longer stretches.
