If those colors aren’t available, any from this category will work.
NEEDLES:
US size 7 (4.5 mm) 16”, 24”, 32”, 40”, 47” circular needles or size needed to achieve gauge (47” for larger sizes only), and DPNs (double pointed needles) for sleeves
SKILL LEVEL:
Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include reading a pattern, garment construction and shaping, working increases and decreases, knitting colorwork stripes both flat and in the round, and picking up stitches for the sleeves and neckband.
Notes from the Designer:
The word “balmy” denotes calm and peace, both in the weather and a person’s mindset. Knitting can help soothe nerves after a stressful time and make you feel productive, even if nothing else has gone right during the day. The Balmy cardigan is worked in simple stockinette stitch, which is very rhythmic and soothing, especially when paired with a favorite TV show or audiobook. A generous stripe pattern keeps the design interesting. The cardigan also features a V-neck with top-down raglan shaping and a seed stitch trim in a contrasting color that ties all the stripes together. You can knit the pattern in just two colors or go crazy with lots of colors in the body – it’s up to you! On page 8, you’ll find a detailed yardage breakdown based on the number of colors used. I hope you find this cardigan to be a fun piece to add to your wardrobe and that you feel a sense of balmy calm while knitting it.
- Click here to watch a video featuring this cardigan along with five other cardigans you can make.
- The sample shown used five colors and is shown in size Small on a 34” (86 cm bust) with 2” (5 cm) of positive ease. It used one skein each of Colors A, C, D, and E and two skeins of Color B.
- The sweater is worked flat, top-down with raglan shaping. The sleeves are picked up and worked in the round, so no seaming is involved.
- If you use only two colors, you can carry the non-working yarn along the side to avoid weaving in so many ends during finishing; otherwise, you’ll need to break each color with every stripe. The trim on the cuffs, hem, and neckband is worked in a separate color that’s not used in the rest of the sweater.
- Once you get to the body of the sweater, be sure to try it on as you go to check the length, so it’s just right for you.
