A hat and a matching small (swatch) bag feature Estonian techniques which are described with diagrams in the pattern. These techniques are also described in Folk Knitting in Estonia by Nancy Bush: the vikkel braid, a nupp, a three-color twist, and the Kihnu Troi cast-on. Each also has a stranded design from the book Latvian Dreams by Joyce Williams et al..

You can use three or four colors, or even more. The hat uses 100 g of the main color, less than 50 g of the other colors. The bag uses less than 50 g each of two or three colors.

The hat has an option for a rounded top and for a pointy top with a tassel. The bottom of the hat can be lined or allowed to roll. All patterns are charted.

For the hat sizes, I have made all with casting on 112 st, getting a hat that’s about 21 inches around. A smaller or larger hat can be made by adjusting the gauge or stitch count accordingly.
