Baltic Sock
This pattern is a KnitCrate exclusive - offered in the October 2013 Sock KnitCrate.
Skill Level: Intermediate; knitter should be familiar with toe-up socks, heel with short rows using double stitches, and bind off from inside the sock.
The inspiration for this sock pattern came from photos of old sweaters worn by the men who fished for a living on the Baltic Sea. These sweaters were often made in a natural-colored beige/brown yarn. They were knit in a slightly-twisted pattern which gave them a waffle-like surface that trapped heat and made the garments very warm.
You can still find places in the Bay of Bothnia (the far north of the Baltic Sea) where the water is clear and the bottom shimmers with little rocks and broken shells in brown and beige colors reminiscent of the yarn used in this pattern.
