In Atlantic Canada, a Barachois is a lagoon separated from the ocean by a shingle or rock bar (sand bar for those rare sandy spots!). Phonetic pronounciation is: bærəˈʃwɑ. A barachois is the inspiration behind this loose, poncho-style pullover.

The stranded colourwork band is worked first, in the round. Stitches are picked up on either side and the sweater is continued on the bias in stockinette and Travelling Vine lace.

Sizes

(1, 2) (3, 4) with finished body circumferences:
(131.5, 137.5) (147.5, 155.5)cm /
(51.75, 54) (58, 61.25)”.

Sample shown is size 2 on 89cm / 35” bust and 98cm / 38.5” hips,
corresponding to about 39.5cm / 15.5” positive ease at hips. I recommend choosing a size that gives you 20 to 51cm / 8” to 20” ease at hips.

Yarn

Fleece & Harmony Eldon Lace (70% Canadian wool, 30% Canadian mohair and 457 metres / 500 yards per 80 grams) in the two main colours (MC1 and MC2) and six contrast colours (CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5, CC6). Amounts listed below. If using sample yarn, you will need 2 full skeins of MC1, 2 full skeins of MC2, and 1 mini skein each of contrast colours CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5, CC6 (available as a kit at Fleece & Harmony). This is hand-dyed yarn, please alternate the skeins of MC1 and MC2 as you work for even colour distribution. Available as a kit here Fleece & Harmony Barachois Kit.
