Barlby Cowl
My home is in the Vale of York next to the River Ouse. It is a place of big skies and arable fields. Before the laying of the railways in the late 19th century the river was used to carry goods to and from the major port of Hull. Like the coastal fishermen, the boatmen of the River Ouse also wore ganseys. This cowl is inspired by the simple stitch patterns of those garments, featuring a twisted rib to echo the cables that always twist in one direction and a simple diamond outline bound by garter stitch around the centre. Barlby is knitted in bouncy, cuddly WYS The Croft Aran which has great stitch definition. It is spun in Yorkshire from yarn which has travelled down from Shetland.
I hope you enjoy your journey upriver with this pattern
