My home is in the Vale of York next to the River Ouse. It is a place of big skies and arable fields. Before the laying of the railways in the late 19th century the river was used to carry goods to and from the major port of Hull. Like the coastal fishermen, the boatmen of the River Ouse also wore ganseys. This wrap is inspired by the simple stitch patterns of those garments and is a sister pattern to my Barlby cowl. Knitted flat, it features a twisted rib to echo the cables of those original ganseys that always twisted in one direction apparently due to a superstition about mirrors and reflections, and a simple diamond outline around the centre. The shape is a trapezium and so increases steadily on each side from a long cast on.
