Barley, an A-line pullover with a wide neck and slightly belled sleeves, is worked in the round from the top down, and is accented by cables that run down both sides of front and back, as well as the outsides of the sleeves. On the “right” side, the cables appear as narrow double cables that meld with the smooth stockinette background, while on the “wrong” side (yes, this pullover is reversible!), they form traditional horseshoe cables against a purled background.

The length is easily customized (but do remember to buy extra yarn if making Barley longer than specified in the
pattern).

Needles
US size 6/4.0 mm: 24-47” circular needle (cir), depending on selected garment size, for body, and preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round, for sleeves.
US size 3/3.25 mm, 24-47” cir, for neckband and hem ribbing, and preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round, for cuff ribbing.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions Markers, cable needle, stitch holders, tapestry needle.

Gauge 21 sts/32 rows to 4”/10 cm in St st on larger needles. Measure gauge on blocked swatch.

Notes
The yoke is worked in the round from the top down to the armholes; then separated into sections for the body and sleeves. Stitches are cast on for the underarms, and the body and sleeves are worked separately in the round to the hem and cuffs.

To make Barley fully reversible, start new balls of yarn within a cable section; when the ends are woven in during finishing, the cut ends can then be hidden inside a cable crossing, making them invisible on both sides of the garment.
