When I was young, my grandfather would take me to the rodeo, and of all the events I hooted and hollered for, barrel racing was my favorite. A horse and rider attempt to gallop a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels, and the fastest time takes the champion prize. In a male dominated industry, this has always been the only event specifically designed for women, and it dared me to dream of the day I might get to compete, as well. As I got older and learned more about the mental and physical turmoil show horses often endure, my love for riding shifted a great deal. I began to develop bonds with these incredible animals on calm winding trails through the mountains, instead. However, I will never forget those early days as a young buckaroo on the rodeo stands, wearing a ten gallon hat three sizes too big, popcorn in one hand and papa holding the other.

This sweater is constructed a little differently from other seamed cardigans. All the pieces are knit flat (one back panel, two front panels, and two sleeves), then sewn together with a modified mattress stitch technique. After the pieces have been joined, ribbing is added to the bottom hem, collar, and cuffs, much like a tailored garment would be constructed. I’ve chosen this method to create a clean, polished finish and a more comfortable fit.

This cardigan can be made as a cropped or full length sweater and is designed to have 4 inches of positive ease for all sizes. Measure around the fullest part of your bust, add 4 inches, and choose the size that number. If you are between sizes, go up one for a looser fit or down one for a tighter fit.
