A friend bet me that I couldn’t knit a Yankee Sweater for his newborn son. I said “I can knit anything” so I did. He was very surprised and thrilled when I presented him with this sweater when his son was born. That was 4 years ago, and I finally got around to writing and testing the pattern out.

Notes: Knitted from the top down, sleeves are put on hold until the bottom is knit. This pattern requires knowledge of stranded work, and must be worked very loosely for this pattern to fit nicely.

Sizes: (0-6m, 6-12m, 1-2, 2-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12) Children’s Sizes

Estimated Amount of Yarn required: (300 , 400 , 500, 550, 800, 900 , 1000 , 1100) yards of main colour and (75, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700) of the stripe colour,

However this depends on how tight or loosely you work your stranding so buy an extra ball to be sure. Most good yarn stores let you return un-used balls in their original state, or you could make a hat to match.

Sport Weight Yarn: 220 Superwash Sport by Cascade in White (871) and Navy (854) (or your team colours)

Needle: US 5 or whatever needle you need to get gauge (optional: use a needle size down for the ribbing, I used the same needle throughout)

Gauge: 24 sts/ 4 inches in Stocking Stitch

Stitch Markers: M¹= marker 1, split ring style to place through a stitch
M²= marker 2, in a second colour
