Basic beanie with a twist
Despite the name of this beanie, this is not a basic or beginner beanie. The stitches used Make this more of an intermediate pattern or advanced beginner. Nothing is difficult but is not one you can toss off and an hour. I wanted to do something with a little bit of interest and fun.
Stitches you need to know

Crocheting into back and third Loop of Stitch…When you crochet into the back Loop, when the previous row was HDC, there will be a third Loop. Put your hook into the back Loop, tilt your work a little bit towards you and look on the backside and underneath your back Loop and you will see a smaller Loop right underneath. Do that loop as well so you are putting your hook through two loops. That gives a little bit more stability than just the back Loop.
Tips and thoughts
An adult size hat measures 6 3/4” across the circle before you stop increasing.
Gauge= why bother?
I think hats are sometimes difficult for some people to make. Even if you use the exact yarn and the exact hook size, we all crochet a little differently, our tension is different. I tend to crochet loosely and my stitches are tall. So yes, to be able to make a successful hat and have it fit, please do a gauge Swatch. If you know you are a tight crocheter, I would recommend going up a hook size.
5.00 mm hook
12 rows x 12 SC =4”
We begin the hat with a 5.00mm hook. The middle section, moss stitch, is tighter and denser, so we will go up a hook size for this portion and then go back to the 5.00 mm hook to finish the hat.
