Basic Bikini
A free version is also available.
This bikini is the ESSENTIAL addition to everyone’s summer wardrobe. This little staple takes less than 2 hours (1 if you’re quick!) to make and comes with CUSTOMIZABLE SIZING so that you can adjust your bikini to fit YOUR measurements.
The “Basic Bikini” is aptly named because of its simple construction. You start by knitting two cups (don’t worry, I’ll show you how to create those neat edges and increases), attaching them, and finally adding straps while casting off with a simply technique that leaves you with a neatly finished edge. You can add elastic in afterward to make your bikini swim-hardy and long-lasting -- or just leave it the way it is for aesthetic sunbathing on the beach, of course :)
The pattern is clearly written and formatted in an easy-to-read way. Each step is carefully explained and there is a video tutorial included!
If you purchase this pattern, you will receive a printable PDF for download with written instructions and linked video tutorials.
SIZING
Made-to-measure. In this pattern I provide a detailed explanation on how to knit a bikini to your proportions. There are options throughout on how to extend the cups both lengthwise and widthwise.
Note: This pattern does not include bust-shaping. Although the bikini I made is the best fitting triangle bikini I have ever had on my smaller chest, for larger-busted girls I would recommend looking up whether bust shaping would be necessary. I have included a line in the pattern where optional bust-shaping can be easily added.
MATERIALS
Any yarn. I recommend a fingering/sport/DK weight yarn in a wool/cotton blend. The wool will help prevent your bikini from stretching out, and the cotton will keep it cool.
For reference, I used DROPS Safran yarn held double. Since this is a cotton yarn, I have added elastic to keep it well-fitting.
Use any needle size that will create a desirable fabric when paired with yarn choice. Consider sizing down to create a more opaque fabric.
For reference, I used US 4 3.5 mm knitting needles.
OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED: 3.5 mm crochet hook for straps. If you prefer a knitted i-cord, you can also use a smaller needle size. There are instructions in the pattern for both methods.
GAUGE
Any gauge!
