Basic fingerless mittens for lady or child
The same pattern and needles are used for both Ladies and Child’s versions of the mitten, but the yarn thickness is different, to give the size difference
Materials required: set of 4 double pointed size 2.5 mm knitting needles, approx 160 yards/150 metres DK/Light worsted yarn (roughly equivalent to a 50 g ball) for ladies mittens or 4-ply/fingering for child’s mittens, stitch holder.
Thanks to Rockleigh for the information that size 3.25 mm needles and DK/Light worsted yarn will make mittens to fit a mans hand.
Ability level: Intermediate
Finished sizes (approximate as these mittens do stretch)
Ladies mittens: 7½-inches/19 cm long by 3½-inches/9 cm across palm
Child’s mittens: 6½-inches/16 cm long by 3-inches/7.5 cm across palm
Gauge
Ladies mittens
7 sts and 10 rows = 1-inch/2.5 cm over stocking /stockinette stitch
Childs mittens
8 sts and 11 rows = 1-inch/2.5 cm over stocking/stockinette stitch
