Design
Cheap / easy to work / flattering. This is the Basico sweater in a nut-shell. I wanted to work a lovely pattern for wearing around-the-year that would be possible to work even for a fairly new knitter.
Cotton-yarn is cheap, gentle to the skin, lovely to wear at any time. Worked in red I will probably be wearing this to pieces.
The hem, cuffs and upper section of the body is worked in k1, p1-rib.
The main-body and sleeves are worked in a broader, flattering vertical rib.
The boat-neck is slightly scooped at the front to give a lovely soft neckline.
Construction
The lower body is worked bottom-up and in-the-round to underarms. Work is divided for upper back and front to be worked in separate pieces. The neckline of the front is shaped by binding off sts. When all sts are bound off you pick up sts for the finishing in k1, p1-rib. Shoulders are bound off using the 3-needle bind-off.
Sleeves are worked from picked-up sts. The sleeve-cap is shaped by simple short-rows. When all the sts are integrated sleeve is worked top-down and in-the-round to desired length.
Sizes
You have 16 sizes to choose from.
Finished bust circumference:33/34.25/35.5/38/39.25/40.5/42/43/44.5/45.25/46/47.25/48.5/50/51/52.25”
Materials
Cotton is really cheap, and you get great value for your money!
The sweater might, of course, be worked in any yarn that knits up to gauge.
Yarn: I recommend that you use a sport weight yarn with great stitch-definition. It is important that you work according to gauge to achieve a great result! I used ”Organic Cotton” from Krea Deluxe. This yarn is of sport weight and comes in balls of 50gr/1.76oz and 165meters/180yards. You will need 5/5/6/6/6/7/7/7/8/8/8/9/9/9/10/10 balls of this yarn to work the cardigan. Needles: A long circular needle, 80cm/32”, needle size 3mm/US2.5 the ribbed hem and neckline of the body. A long circular needle, 80cm/32”, needle size 3.5mm/US4 to work the lower body. You can use the same circular needle, or straight needles size 3.5mm/US4 to work the upper back and front. A circular needle 40cm/16”, needle size 3.5mm/US4 to work the sleeve-cap. Dpns (or a circular needle if working the magic loop), needle size 3.5mm/US4 to work the sleeves. Dpns (or a circular needle if working the magic loop), needle size 3mm/US2.5 to work the cuffs. Important: Use the needle size needed to obtain gauge! Notions: 2 stitch-markers. Tapestry needle. Separate holders.
The pattern
The Basico sweater is really easy to work! No shaping of body or sleeves, no extra work for the neckline. No seams.
All measurements are in cm’s AND inches.
All necessary stitch-counts are given.
There is a schematic.
Knitting skills: k, p, k1tbl, p1tbl, cast-on, bind-off. Binding off using the 3 needle bind-off method. Picking up of sts. Short-rows (wraps are not picked up).
