Basics of Love is an elegant, light lace shawl in a happy colourway, invoking youth and the first discovery of love. As we leave childhood behind, we also start to look at others around us in another light. We go through a rainbow of emotions for the first time, the excitement as our hands accidentally touch, finding ourselves thinking about someone all the time… I wanted to capture the sweetness of that age, and design a shawl that can be worn by a youngster in love as much as a mature or even a proudly old lover just the same. Because love is for everyone.

Yarn: Cotton Kings Sultan, colour 29, Rainbow Pyrite, 200 g/800 m (7 oz/874 yds) (one cake)

Needles: 4 mm (US 6), 80 cm (32”) or longer circulars (or size to get gauge)

Gauge: 21,5 sts/32 rs in 10 cm/4” in eyelet stitch pattern

Size: 175 x 140 x 106 cm/69 x 55 x 42” (adjustable)

Required skills: basic knitting

Notions: 6 stitch markers, 1 small bead

Based on tester experience I can say that almost any yarn will work with the pattern, with a recommendation that heavier than DK/light worsted will not show off the stitch pattern as nicely, and very heavily variegated yarns (like most sock yarns) can be a bit too busy for it, although some of them can work - a little gambling! Fancy yarns like eyelash, thick and thin etc. I’d also save for a different pattern. Other than that from cobweb to DK anything goes! The shawl’s size is fully adjustable so it can accommodate different yarn weights.
