Basilan is the second shawl of my series on the theme of Pacific’s light. It reflects the deep orange light of the sky at the end of the day, or the full sun itself at noon. This kind of deep bright light is lovely, warm and slightly melancholic because it often occurs at the end of something, the morning or the day.
I have chosen to design a very large shawl in which you would like to wrap yourself when looking for comfort and dreaming of the sunny areas around the world.
Basilan is a triangular shawl, slightly asymmetrical, worked flat from one point to the other. It is a succession of garter stitches bands and easy pattern bands finished with lace. The instructions are given row by row, and charts are added. A beginner could make most of the work.
It is worked with sport weight yarn at the gauge: 21 sts x 42 rows.
It also may worked with thiner yarn at the smaller gauge. The shawl will be smaller.
Yarn
Katia Nature (100% wool, 3.53 oz/100 g, 448 yds/410 m), colour Cranberry: 3 skeins. Or 1400 m of any sport or fingering weight yarn. A solid or semisolid yarn (or a fading one) will be preferable to show clearly the pattern.
Needles and notion
- One circular needle US 5/3.75 mm, 32 in/80 cm minimum.
- One circular needle US 3/3.25 mm for the lace.
- 2 stitches markers.
- 1 tapestry needle.
A huge thank you to my lovely testers who worked hard to correct this pattern and give it its final touch.
