It won’t really matter what yarn you use, though, this would look best in a solid or a self striping yarn with large color blocks. That way, the design and the color or colorway won’t fight with each other for prominence.

This isn’t the traditional basketweave; there’s a little more interest than that which is why a striping yarn could be catchy and why a solid would show off your work.
Feel free to mix it up with more or fewer stitches to make the block.
