Challenged to produce a unisex beanie with a particular woven texture, I have come up with this: Basketcase was designed in the middle of the night (yes really) and with a bit of trial and error to get the weave effect to really behave, I think this does the job! Perfect for teen & adult heads and cosy-warm too!

It’s a fun knit and doesn’t need any crown decreases to produce a hat which fits nicely and can be adapted in subtle ways by adding length to the brim for a nice cosy double fold, and/or adding width to the whole piece for a loose casual slouch.

Uses 1 skein of DK-weight 8ply wool or merino (or similar), and 3mm, 3.5mm and 4mm needles (depending which version you knit). A third needle tip is required right at the end for the 3-needle bind-off seam.

First three photos show the fitted version with the double-fold brim; next three photos show the oversized slouch version with the shorter single brim.
