basketweave bonnet
A sweet bonnet for baby, in a simple knit and purl stitch pattern that gives a look of a woven basket. A stockinette back is seamed to the main crown fabric using crochet slip stitch. The bottom of the bonnet is finished with an i-cord border with knotted ends on the ties. The bonnet is knit with fingering weight yarn held double.
Size: One size. The stitch pattern has a lot of stretch, so the bonnet should fit several sizes. Please see finished measurements. Perhaps best for 1-2 years, though could fit a younger or older child as well!
Gauge:
26 stitches x 38 rows = 4x4 inches in basket weave stitch
26 stitches x 36 rows = 4x4 inches in stockinette stitch
Note: If you are a visual learner like me, I have bolded and underlined some of the techniques used here that can be searched for on YouTube. There are many great video tutorials that can help!
Techniques used:
Long tail cast on
Neaten last stitch of bind off
Crochet slip stitch seaming
I-cord
I-cord border
Suggested Yarn:
1 skein fingering weight merino wool yarn, such as Knitting for Olive Merino
Note: The pattern is worked with yarn held double. You can divide the 1 skein into two balls evenly by using a kitchen scale. Alternatively, you could use 2 skeins of the same yarn, knowing you’ll have lots left over.
Needles:
Size A circular or straight needle for rib border (suggested: 2.25mm/US 1)
Size B circular or straight needle for main fabric (suggested: 3.25mm/US 3)
Note: You will need a Size B double pointed needle for the i-cord border if you do not use a circular needle.
Crochet hook - size doesn’t matter too much, something thin enough to fit through the bound-off stitches. (suggested: 3 mm/size C)
Notions:
Tapestry needle
Removable stitch markers
