Looks like a very classic pattern, but it has some fluttering secrets: bats and cicadas. At least, those are the small animals that I see in the pattern – but you might see something different. This sock pattern is a homage to the traditional Houndstooth pattern, changing a stitch here and there, but keeping the system of a seamless pattern intact. So, how about knitting a timeless classic with a little twist? And because it’s only a small 6x6 pattern repeat, it‘s size-inclusive and easily adjustable to fit your feet. You can choose between three motifs: hanging bats, bats flying upwards, and cicadas. The black-and-gray socks showcase hanging bats, the socks in autumn colors the cicada motif.

The socks are worked from the cuff down with a short row heel. The toe is finished with Kitchener stitch. The length of the foot is easily individually adjustable, particularly due to the small pattern repeat. You can use just two colors, or you can make it a colorful leftover yarn project, choosing a different contrast color for each pattern repeat.

The instructions include written directions for every part of the socks and some general remarks on knitting fitting socks in colorwork. Furthermore, different colorwork charts and a summarizing table with all the measurements and required amounts of yarn/yardage.

The instructions are given for approx. size EU 34-35 (UK 2-3, US Women 4-5) up to EU 44-45 (UK 10.5-11.5, US Women 12.5-13.5).
Measurements of the finished socks are as following:
Size 1 (CO 66 sts): 17.4 cm/6.8 in circumference and 20.5 cm/8.1 in foot length
Size 2 (CO 72 sts): 19 cm/7.5 in circumference and 22.6 cm/8.9 in foot length
Size 3 (CO 78 sts): 20.5 cm/8.1 in circumference and 24.2 cm/9.6 in foot length
Size 4 (CO 78 sts): 20.5 cm/8.1 in circumference and 24.6 cm/9.7 in foot length
Size 5 (CO 84 sts): 22.1 cm/8.7 in circumference and 26.25 cm/10.3 in foot length
Size 6 (CO 90 sts): 23.7 cm/9.3 in circumference and 28.25 cm/11.1 in foot length

YARN
Fingering weight yarn or 4-ply sock yarn.

NEEDLES
Set of double-pointed needles 2.5 mm (US 1.5, UK 12 or 13) or size required to achieve gauge.
If desired, additional thinner needles for single color sections.

Sieht aus wie ein klassisches Muster, birgt aber kleine, flatternde Geheimnisse: Fledermäuse und Zikaden. Zumindest sind das die kleinen Tiere, die ich darin erkenne. Aber jede/r sieht vielleicht etwas anderes im Muster. Die Socken sind eine Hommage an das traditionelle Hahnentrittmuster; einzelne Maschen wurden abgeändert, aber das System eines nahtlosen Musters wurde beibehalten. Also: Lust, einen zeitlosen Klassiker mit einem kleinen Twist zu stricken? Die Socken lassen sich zudem leicht an jeden Fuß anpassen, da das Muster nur aus einem kleinen 6x6 Rapport besteht. Es stehen drei Motive zur Auswahl: hängende Fledermäuse, nach oben fliegende Fledermäuse und Zikaden. Die schwarz-grauen Socken sind mit hängenden Fledermäusen gestrickt, die Socken in den Herbstfarben zeigen das Zikaden-Motiv.
Die Socken werden am Bündchen begonnen und zur Spitze gestrickt; die Ferse wird als Bumerang-Ferse gearbeitet. Die Spitze wird mit Maschenstich abgeschlossen. Die Fußlänge ist leicht individuell anpassbar, insbesondere aufgrund des kleinen Musterrapports. Es können lediglich zwei Farben verwendet werden oder es kann ein buntes Resteprojekt werden, indem für jede Musterwiederholung eine andere Musterfarbe gewählt wird.
Die Anleitung enthält Textanweisungen für jeden Teil der Socken und einige allgemeine Hinweise zum Stricken passender Socken in Jacquard-Technik, weiterhin Strickschriften für den Musterrapport und eine zusammenfassende Tabelle mit allen Maßen und benötigten Wollmengen.
