Beacon Hill Cowl
This is a crochet version of the Greater Boston Yarn Crawl 2017 knitted cowl “Beacon Hill”. It is worked in joined rounds, making extensive use of front post stitches to create textures similar to those in the knitted cowl, without being a slavish copy.
The project is suitable for an intermediate crocheter, or an adventurous advanced beginner who is ready to learn how to manage multiple stitch patterns in the same project. Don’t be afraid to give this a try, and don’t be shy about asking for help!
The pictured green sample is worked in Berocco Comfort DK with a G/6 (4 mm) hook, which renders a comfortably snug cowl of 7-1/2: x 21”, a size similar to the knitted “Beacon Hill”. The pattern can be easily adapted to crochet a narrower and/or longer cowl, if desired. The pictured blue sample is worked in Frog Tree Pima Silk with an H/8 (5 mm) hook, leaving out some of the row repeats, which renders a looser one-loop cowl of 5” x 26” (2.5 x 66 cm). The pattern can easily be further adapted to render a two-loop cowl, if desired.
Gauge is really not critical for this pattern, but swatching is still highly recommended to help you learn the stitch patterns and predict the finished size of your cowl.
Looking forward to seeing some Beacon Hill Cowls on the Yarn Crawl—crocheted and knitted!
