Beamer
In many places in Scotland, “to take a beamer”, is to blush, most usually with embarrassment, but you are more likely to beam with happiness when wearing this appealing shawl.
Yarn
Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed (70% wool; 30% mohair; 100m / 109yds per 25g ball)
Cranachan: 7 x 25g balls
Needles and notions
Gauge-size needle (80-100cm / 32-40in long)
Tapestry needle
Gauge
17 sts and 24 rows to 10cm / 4in over stockinette worked back and forth.
Use 4mm needle as a starting point for swatching. Although it is not crucial to match gauge precisely for this pattern, if your gauge is loose, you will use more yarn (and likewise will use less yarn if your gauge is too tight).
Size
178cm x 84cm / 70in / 33in at widest and longest points after blocking.
Size is adjustable.
Pattern notes
This shawl begins with a garter-tab cast on, and is worked top-down, alternating plain and patterned sections, following a series of charts.
Chart notes
Charts are read from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows. Both sides of the shawl are charted, together with the edging and centre stitches, to make visualising the construction of the shawl straightforward.
