Show off your skills with this Celtic inspired blanket.

It features closed-ring cables, multi-colour cable work (done like intarsia, which are then cabled), appliqué and part appliqué, and chain-stitch embroidery.

It’s easy to take your knitting with you, as the squares and the components of the borders are worked separately and then sewn together.

Skills

This is quite a complex pattern, not suitable for total beginners.

The closed-ring cables are explained in the pattern, but you should already know how to do intarsia, chain stitch embroidery and whip stitch as well as mattress stitch seams. Large parts of the pattern are charted, not written out line by line, so you should be able to read charts and familiarise yourself with new chart symbols.

Material

I recommend pure wool aran weight yarn with good stitch definition. At 180m (197yd)/100g, you will need:

  • Colour 1: approx. 950 g (here: denim blue)
  • Colour 2: approx. 650 g (here: cream / beige)
  • Colour 3: approx. 300 g (here: light grey)
  • Colour 4: approx. 300 g (here: mud / grey brown)

You will also need knitting needles, 2 extra knitting needles (sock needles are okay), 2 cable needles, 2 stitch holders or safety pins, pins, sewing and tapestry needle, basting thread in a contrasting colour.

Alongside the main pattern, there is a supplementary downloadable document with more notes and pictures on appliqué and embroidery.
