Beauty in Chaos Shawl
Even though there are written instructions for each row, this is more of a recipe to create your own Triangle Shawl. Don’t stress if your stitches don’t line up or you are missing a stitch or two, you can easily make up for it on the next row- just make sure you are consistently increasing in the first stitch, last stitch and the corner space.
Generally when you follow a pattern you can expect that there will be a repeat of a specific number of rows that grows your pattern, this pattern is not like that. I started this project months ago as a mindless project and decided I’d just do whatever I felt like when I was done a particular row but after sharing it in my group, I had an overwhelming response to it and requests for a written pattern. The only problem was I hadn’t written anything down so I had to start a new one to make sure what I did could be repeated easily enough.
There aren’t stitch counts after each row except for the first 10 rows or so and if you mess up or have too many or too few stitches, you can recover on the next row. As long as you know that a basic triangle shawl grows by increasing in the first stitch, the center stitch and the last stitch, you are free to play around with the stitches in between. If your shawl is pulling in on itself when you hold the two ends of the long, straight edge together than you aren’t increasing enough and if your ends start ruffling then you are adding too many stitches. The premise behind this design is that there are no set rules- you can use my row instructions as a guide or you can pick and choose what stitches you want to skip or if you want to repeat certain rows for a more cohesive pattern or even add rows and stitches to it if you like. If you mess up and your count is off, you can just keep going and even it out on the next row. I promise what seems like a chaotic process will result in something uniquely beautiful.
