Because I Can, Mitt!
A brilliant idea from much colder climes, these are hugely popular all across Scandinavia! Can Holder Mitts are a must for anyone who has ever held a cold can or bottle while standing outside on a very cold night! (They also work really well holding hot coffee from your favorite coffee shop!) And, you don’t have to “hold” the can! The mitts do it for you.
Please Note: The patterns for these Mitts are intended to be worked in Chunky/Bulky weight yarns that call for a size 10 or 10 1/2 needle.
There are 2 different patterns included here.
The “Simple” Mitt is a very fast knit worked with a ribbed cuff and a stockinette body. This is the “traditional” Can Mitt, but with a twist, your thumb can actually hold the can unlike traditional Can Mitts!
The “Cabled” Mitt has a ribbed cuff and a cabled body.
Both mitts also have patterns for a “matching” mitt, assuming you’d like something on the hand that’s not holding the can!
Materials:
Use any Bulky yarn that recommends Size 10 or 10 1/2 needles. One Can Holder Mitt will use as little as 90 yds (uncabled) and about 100 yds for the cabled version. Double the amount if you’re also going to knit the matching mitt.
I used dpn’s.
You’ll also need a cable needle if you’re going to do the cabled mitt
You will also need waste yarn, about 12 - 15 inches and a can of some sort to measure your mitt with as you knit it.
These take about 2 hours per mitt… so what are you waiting for???
