As I walked along a busy New York street one crisp fall day, I noticed a short tailored jacket with an asymmetrical front. I was so enthralled that I stopped on the spot to sketch ideas for translating it into knitwear. This jacket is an ideal introduction to the main techniques I use for sideways knits---short-row shaping combined with increases and decreases on an effortless stockinette-stitch backdrop. The generous flared sleeves add a welcome bit of drama.
