At the beginning of the year, I chose a few words that I wanted to hold as intentions for the year, and that I wished to use as inspiration for some of my new designs.

The word I chose for this design is become: “to change and start to be something different, or to start to have a different quality” MacMillian Online Dictionary

For me, to become, is about change, it is about being true to yourself, and becoming the person your heart wishes to be, it is about building a new life. So for this design, I wanted to embrace that shift, and the perfect source of inspiration was a glass jar where I keep small amounts of leftover yarn, usually less than 10g each, these cuffs were designed to use up some of my favourite bits and pieces, and in the process, to become something new, something useful.

Materials:
• One 4mm / US size 6 circular needle, at least 80cm / 32” in length for magic loop or one set of 4mm / US size 6 DPNs, or size needed to meet the required gauge.
• Cable needle
• 3 (4, 5, 6) Stitch markers, optional, one of which is used to mark the beginning of round.
• Tapestry needle for sewing in threads.
• Blocking materials.
• Fingering weight yarn, approximately 90m (120m, 150m, 180m) / 98yds (131yds, 164yds, 197yds) of the main colour and approximately 15m (18m, 22m, 26m) / 16yds (20yds, 24yds, 28yds) each of 7 contrast colours, or a total of 105m (126m, 154m, 182m) / 115yds (138yds, 168yds, 199yds) of fingering weight leftovers.

Gauge:
34 stitches and 30 rounds = 10cm / 4” in cable knitting in the round, measured unstretched. While these cuffs are a forgiving project with regards to sizing, working at a different gauge will alter both size and yardage requirements.

Size:
Four sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4). The cuffs measure 10.5cm (14cm, 17.5cm, 21cm) / 4” (5.5”, 7”, 8.25”) in circumference, unstretched, and are 18.5cm / 7.5” in height. These cuffs can be worn with 1cm – 7.5cm / 0.5” – 3” of negative ease, so choose a size that gives you the desired amount of ease. Wrist warmer and fingerless mitt samples are shown in size 2, with 1 cm negative ease at wrist. Boot cuff sample shown in size 3.

Notes on Colour Changes:
For the sample, I arranged the contrast colours in a fade configuration and changed the contrast colour every 8 rounds for even stripes. Since this pattern is designed to make use of leftover yarn, it is the perfect opportunity to play with colours and is a great way to ensure you use every last bit of those treasured leftovers.

The cuffs are worked in the round, require no seaming and are suitable for those new to cable knitting or wishing to try marling for the first time.

Whereas the option for the fingerless mitts are worked both flat and in the round, but also require no seaming.
