Hiking Beech Mountain Trail in Acadia National Park, we ambled among criss-crossing tree roots and branches, ascending to a beautiful view. These mitts reflect the beauty and challenges of that forest path.

Ambling and exploring – when it’s pleasant
It’s relaxing to work two-color knitting with one yarn at a time and no floats or weaving to worry about. Brioche creates vertical stripes of soft, stretchy ribbing that hug the hand.
Minding the roots and rocks – when it’s challenging
Brioche is a challenging but beautiful stitch. Lifelines are recommended until you become better acquainted with the anatomy of the stitches. Cable needles are recommended, even for those who usually cable without one.
A note about charts and written instructions
Written instructions are given for the mitt construction. Both charts and written instructions are given for the ribbing stitch pattern. For the cable pattern and thumb increases, refer to stitch instructions in the chart key as you read the charts.

A video of the special caston used in this pattern can be found here (as well as in the pattern): Two-Color 2x1 Brioche Caston. An alternative caston is also given in the pattern.
An easier alternative caston is Crochet Caston Without a Crochet Hook.
