Beeswax Mitts
The Beeswax Mitts are a pair of cosy, cabled hand-warmers, completing the set of Beeswax Hat, Cowl, and Mitts. They all feature the same double-layered honeycomb pattern, flowing naturally into and out of the ribbing. The stretchy stitch patterns help ensure a good fit, and the shaping around the thumbs blends into the surrounding honeycomb.
The honeycomb texture is made up of simple mini-cables, which can be knit without a cable needle. I’ve included instructions for my favourite twist method, which I find intuitive and easy to remember, but you can use any method you prefer.
Skills & Techniques
Knitting in the round, increasing and decreasing, and simple 1-over-1 cables. Both charts and full written instructions are provided.
Materials Needed:
1 skein of Vintage Purls Max (75% merino, 25% nylon; 227yds/208m per 100g skein), or 140 (194)yds/128 (177.5)m of DK-weight yarn. Sample colourway: ‘Toffee Deluxe’. If substituting yarn, I recommend choosing a bouncy merino or other woollen-spun yarn with lots of ‘body’, so the cables are plump and well-defined.
You will also need a cable needle (optional), waste yarn for putting the thumb stitches on hold, an end-of-round stitch marker, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Finished Measurements
Sizes 1 (2) relaxed after blocking:
4 (4.5)”/10 (11.5)cm width at the widest part, and
6.25 (8.5)”/16 (21.5)cm long from the cast on at the wrist to the bind off at the knuckles.
To fit 7-7.5 (8-8.5)”/18-19 (20.5-21.5)cm palm circumference, measured just above the thumb.
Size 2 is worked identically to Size 1 but at a different gauge and with a few additional rounds of ribbing. Sample is shown in Size 1.
