Five reasons you’re gonna want to make this hat:

1. This is about as straightforward as it gets for learning two colour brioche in the round. I found I really struggled when I learned the technique because it was difficult to figure out what I was doing from just a cast on row/rnd of stitches. It was cumbersome and fiddley and I ripped it out a LOT. This pattern starts at the crown. So by the time you are ready to start the brioche, you have a nice, solid base to work from! That, and full picture tutorials, tips and tricks, mean you have everything you need right in the pattern.

2. I’ve offered the pattern in 3 sizes, but the real fun happens with the length! It is totally customizable and means that this pattern is really many patterns in one! I’ve included suggested lengths for various styles, including: Beanie, Slouchy Beanie, Watch Cap, Slouchy Double Brim, even a Triple Brim for ultimate squish and warmth!

3. This pattern is a serious stash buster! This hat is knit to a DK weight, however, I’ve mixed and matched different types of fingering and lace weight yarns to have some extra fun with colour and texture! (Suri makes the most delightfully soft and light weight hat ever!) You can mix fingering/lace weights, not use any fuzzy yarn at all if it’s not your thing, use a special Sock Set, use DK weight…there are tons of options and ways to customize and utilize that stash!

4. This hat is FAST! The DK weight makes for a quick knit. And with all the options included this pattern makes for an awesome Gift Knit! I’ve never had so many testers immediately cast on a second…and even a third! Be warned, this is some fun and satisfying knitting.

5. It’s a great balance of pure TV knitting and engaging, fun, new technique…that also quickly becomes TV knitting. So whether this is your very first brioche project, or you’re a seasoned pro, this meditative knit is the perfect pick up anytime/anywhere project.

Materials
Sample Yarn:

Fingering and Suri Double Brim Watch Cap (Pink/Brown/Copper):
1 x 100g, 463yds skein Brine Dyeworks, 75/25 Merino Sock, colour Tubers (MC).
1 x 50g, 328yds skein Gingersnap Yarns, Suri Silk, 75% Brushed Suri Alpaca, 25% silk, lace weight in colour Vintage (CC).

Sock Set Double Brim Watch Cap (Green/Cream Speckle):
1 x 100g/420yds skein Bramble Ridge Hand Dyed Yarns, Merino-Cashmere-Nylon Fingering Sock Yarn, in colour MG (MC).
1 x 20g/93yds mini skein of fingering weight yarn for the CC, in a creamy speckled neutral (CC).

Yardage:
The yardages required will be quite variable due to the easily customized length, and yarn choice. However, one 100g/463yd skein of fingering weight sock yarn and one 50g/328yds skein of suri will be more than enough for the largest and longest hat.

The Pink sample is size 3 with a folded brim, with a total length of 12”. It used approx. 220yds of fingering weight sock yarn and 197yds suri lace yarn.

The Green sample is a size 3 with a folded brim, with a total length of 13”. It used 400yds of fingering weight yarn, which was held double throughout the crown and as the MC for the Brioche section. And 75yds of fingering weight yarn held double for the brioche MC.

Suggested Needles:
4mm/US 6 circular needles 80cm/32” length OR dpns for CO, crown increases, and 40cm/16” length for st st OR size needed to obtain gauge.

3.25mm/US 3 circular needles 40cm/16” length for Brioche and BO, OR size needed to obtain gauge.

Darning needle, 1 unique BOR stitch marker (up to 8 for each inc if desired), measuring tape.

Gauge - 24 sts and 28 rounds/10cm or 4”, in the round, st st on larger needles.
22 sts and 25 Brioche rounds/10cm or 4”, in the round, in Brioche on smaller needles.

Size/Measurements:

Size 1 (S): 17” circ at brim, to fit 19-20” head circ
Size 2 (M): 18.5” circ at brim, to fit 20.5-22” head circ
Size 3 (L): 20” circ at brim, to fit 22-24” head circ

The hat is completely customizable for length and can be made as a beanie, a slouchy beanie, a watch cap, a slouchy double brim, and even a super squishy triple brim! it is totally up to you, and since the hat is started at the crown, trying it on as you go is easy.
