This poncho was inspired by my Be_Leaf in yourself shawl. I love shawls and I have a rather large collection in my wardrobe. The only problem is that when you are living on an island such as New Zealand, the wind gets quite strong and sometimes it is hard to keep the shawl on, without looking like Don Quijote fighting the windmills!
And I am still slightly obsessed with leaves, so a lot of my designs incorporate them, one way or another.
This poncho was designed for working double stranded - 1 strand of 4 to 5ply natural fibre (alpaca, merino) and 1 strand of laceweight mohair.
However formula for different sizes or yarn weights is offered.
This poncho features an allover lace pattern -that looks more complicated than it actually is.
I believe adventurous knitters who are ready to try the lace will be able to tackle this pattern with some concentration required. Just do one repeat of the chart a day - and you can make this in 2 weeks
Intermediate and experienced knitters will get into the rhythm of the repetitive lace easily.
The gauge for this project is not essential, however it needs to be loose enough and drapey and it may affect the finished size and the yardage used. When I knit accessories my knitting style is very relaxed and on the very loose end.
I’m suggesting a size 7mm needle or 8mm if your knitting style is firm.
Please remember - Don’t stress - as long as you choose nice, soft and fine yarns and the gauge is floaty enough, any size you will make will look stunning - as a poncho or if you decide to make it smaller - scrunch it up for a gorgeous cowl/ cape
I used 3 balls of the Drops alpaca 100% - I thought this was a 4ply but it is closer to a 5ply. You may choose to use alternative 4 ply yarns , double stranded with a laceweight mohair (2ply 225 m/ 25g) - approx. 450m of each.
Construction is very simple - one long rectangle, no shaping required. This will be fold in half and seamed to create the poncho shape.
Written instructions and chart - are both offered.

I can not wait to see your take on this.
