This scarf is thick, warm, and perfectly reversible with ‘really clean’ color changes.
You have the option of working from written out or charted instructions. Pattern layout facilitates printing out only the portion of the directions you want to work from.
This is a scarf, so gauge is not as important as your satisfaction with the resulting fabric. Needle size should be adjusted to get a width in the vicinity of 5 or 6 inches. Remember to work through several pattern repeats (cabling rows) in order to get a true approximation of the scarf’s actual width. It is easy to adjust the scarf width by adjusting the cast on in multiples of 8 stitches.
When made as directed (top photo, red and white scarf), the scarf required:
- 155yds(142m) of color A (red)
- 125yds(115m) of color B (white).
This design was inspired by and fits the criteria of the Scarves for Special Olympics Washington State Games. It is my hope that those who took advantage of the free download made up at least one scarf for donation to a charitable cause.
Thank you to Cindy Harrison for the original test knit. Thanks to Russ Moore for the superb tech edit of the upgraded pattern.
Errata for the free download: Apparently, my great-grandmother’s terminology for cast on methods is not up-to-date (I suppose I should not find this surprising since she passed in late 1973, just shy of 101 years of age) and my reference to cast on methods is confusing. After reviewing the video tutorials, I recommend use of the knit on, long-tail or double cast on methods for this scarf. I do not recommend use of the single or backward loop cast on methods for this scarf.
