Knitting socks is my one true love- they’re portable, speedy, and perfect for gorgeous yarns. Bell Burnell was designed after I picked up a skein of bright yellow Manos Del Uruguay and knew I needed some sunny socks in my life. They have just the right mix of simple stockinette and a little excitement of a squishy texture- in my book, the perfect socks!

Bell Burnell socks are knit cuff down, and joined at the toe using Kitchener stitch. Double Andalusian Stitch is worked around the leg and on the top of the foot, while stockinette is worked across the sole. Pattern includes instructions for a short row heel, but comfortable knitters can substitute their preferred heel technique!

Double Andalusian Stitch is a simple-to-knit, high-texture pattern made of knits and purls. Written and charted directions included.

These socks are written for a women’s size 8-ish foot, but modifying the pattern is quite simple to accommodate different sizes (suggestions included in the pattern).

Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell is an astrophysicist most known for her work discovering pulsars in the 1960s as a postgraduate student at Cambridge University. This work would later be awarded to 1974 Nobel Prize in Physics, though Bell Burnell was not listed as a recipient. Forever gracious, Bell Brunell was quoted as saying ‘I believe it would demean Nobel Prizes if they were awarded to research students, except in very exceptional cases, and I do not believe this is one of them“. In 2018, she was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, along with a $2.5CAD million- Bell Burnell donated all the money to help female, minority, and refugee students study physics. I could go on and on about the respect and admiration I have for her, but for now, I dedicate this pattern to her- bright, kind, and generous.
