There were several reasons to name this shawl „Belladonna“. First I wanted to dedicate it to Belladonna Tuk, who was the mother of Bilbo Baggins in Tolkiens world of middle-earth. Her husband and Bilbo Baggins’ father, Bungo Baggins, built the luxury „Baggins End“ where her son Bilbo afterwards lived with his nephew Frodo.
On the other hand „Belladonna“ is the synonym of the deadly nightshade and its little berries are symbolized in little nups which are crocheted along while knitting.
At last adornes this beautiful shawl the neck of every woman and makes her a „Bella donna“.
I let some little butterflies fly in the body section to underline the light and softly charakter of the shawl . Therefore the shawl is an ideal companion on mild spring days.
The shawl was designed specially for one skein of „Pure“ yarn from Rohrspatz & Wollmeise (150 gr/ 525 m yardage) but it can be knitted with every other sockyarn or similiar yarns. The yardage has to be adjusted.
You are free to crochet the nups afterwards. Please note that the yardage will increase because of the needed single crochets. The pattern contains a sample calculation for the yardage.
Materials needed:
Knitting needle size according to yarn weight
Crochet hook size according to yarn weight
Sewing needle
Gauge: 10 cm = 25 stitches and 35 rows in stockinette stitch. Size of the finished shawl (after blocking) approx. 185 x 37 cm.
The shawl is knitted sideways. By regularly increases and decreases it gets it’s asymmetric and curved shape. For the nups you need some basics in crochet (chain stitch, slip stitch, double crochet, double crochet together).
BITTE BEACHTEN! DIES IST DIE ENGLISCHE ANLEITUNG!!! DIE DEUTSCHE ANLEITUNG IST NICHT BEI RAVELRY ERHÄLTLICH!!!
