Bellamy Mittens
I have fond memories of watching David Bellamy on various TV shows when I was a child, sharing his love of the natural world and everything botanical.
I was saddened to hear of his death and designed a fairisle hat as a small tribute to him. There is also a matching cowl and now, mittens.
They feature a botanical theme with curved stems, seeds & seedlings, flowers, fruit/berries and leaves.
Designed to be a ‘stash buster’, you can use your little scraps of colour for the different elements - or choose a colour coordinated theme.
Alternatively, go with just two high contrast yarns for a simplified version.
Materials
I chose to use Shetland yarn for its amazing insulating properties and good range of colours available. I have used a lot of colours but on the whole, only scraps of each colour, so go through your stash and see what you have!
I used about 30g - 35g of my background colour (Jamieson & Smith Supreme) and about 25g of my contrast colours in total (mostly Spindrift).
You are welcome to use your preferred 4 ply but the sizing may be a little different.
Size
They are one size, to fit 7.5” hand but you could change your needle size for a slightly smaller/larger mitten.
I have also included basic instructions on how to adjust them to make fingerless mitts.
I very lightly felted mine as well to help keep the wind out.
They feature a ‘Selbu’ style thumb, with the gusset stitches put on hold by being knitted with waste yarn, then picked up again later.
You will need to be familiar with stranded knitting and working in the round.
The pattern includes full colour charts in all the colours I have used. There will be a black & white set of charts available soon, to make it easier to work with your own colour choices so you are not distracted by mine!
Happy Knitting!!
